Dust with a dry, soft cloth. Keep the board away from radiators, underfloor-heating hot spots and direct sunlight, which dry and fade timber over time. Wipe spills immediately and never soak the wood. A little beeswax or a hard-wax oil once a year keeps the surface nourished.

Buff with a dry, soft cloth. Avoid metal polishes and solvents on plated finishes; they can dull the plating. Store pieces in their fitted compartments or drawer so they do not knock against one another.

Wipe with a microfibre cloth. Fingerprints lift with a breath and a soft cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaners. Lift pieces rather than sliding them on a mirror-polished board.

Brush baize lightly with a soft brush if needed. Slide drawers gently; timber settles with use and the seasons. Close clasps before carrying a folding set so the pieces stay secured inside.

The magnets need no maintenance. Keep magnetic pieces away from bank cards and mechanical watches, as with any magnet.

Timber moves with humidity. Avoid leaving a board in a car boot, a conservatory or a damp cellar. If a folding board feels tight after a change of season, give it a few days at room temperature before forcing it.
